Artist Statement:
Inspiration can be found anywhere and everywhere you look. A stroll on the beach, a walk through the city, or even in a dirty garage, offer an endless supply of concepts for a work of art.
My work conveys the inspiration that I find in my surroundings. Sometimes something as simple as the blade of a saw or a bellows used to blow on a fire can inspire an entire series of work. This body of work conveys simple found objects that inspire minimal or complex linear forms. I use textured glazes to emulate weathered or patinaed surfaces that are common due to the salty air of Coastal North Carolina.

Steve Kelly
Steve Kelly has a simple mission: to craft useful and beautiful ceramic objects that are equally at home on the table and the mantle. After studying pottery in Montana, a region rich in ceramic tradition, Kelly apprenticed with a master potter in the hills of Virginia, where, in keeping with the ethos of traditional Asian ceramics, he spent thousands of hours creating vessels that both honor the humble nature of clay and transcend it. Kelly, who is also a painter and long-time admirer of the American street art and graffiti scene, honed his distinctive water-etching technique while living in Portland, Oregon, where he started Kelly Pottery. The abstract etchings evoke typographical elements and create surface textures that exaggerate the curves.

For as long as I can remember I have always expressed myself through the arts. Molding objects out of clay or interpreting the world through painting seems to flow naturally. My clay work is inspired by natural forms. I enjoy pushing the medium until it evolves into a pleasing shape. Texture and color are used to enhance and compliment the shapes. Creating is so much fun and so rewarding. I can't imagine an existence without it.

I have been surrounded by art my entire life. As an adult, my focus was painting with watercolor and acrylics. I was introduced to clay several years ago and I fell in love! For me, it is the transformation of holding a block of raw clay and turning it into a beautiful sculpture or functional piece of art. I really enjoy hand building. I love the process of creating pieces that emulate interesting things that surround us in our everyday lives. Being a part of the pottery community has given me so much joy!
